Why OffWatch exists

Offwatch Social Ltd is a company building OffWatch, a mobile application for people who work at sea and offshore — a group whose social lives are shaped by rotation schedules, limited shore leave, and long periods away from the people they'd otherwise stay close to.

What OffWatch is

OffWatch is being designed as a mobile app to help maritime professionals — seafarers, offshore energy workers, and others in similarly isolating rotational roles — form genuine friendships and connect with people who understand that way of life, both while on assignment and during time on shore.

The application is currently in development and has not yet launched publicly.

Our mission

To give people whose work keeps them away from home a way to build real, lasting connections with others who share that experience — without asking them to hand over more of themselves, or more of their data, than the purpose actually requires.

Why it exists

Existing social and dating apps are built for a general audience, and general-purpose engagement mechanics — endless feeds, algorithmic matching optimised for time-on-app, broad public discovery — sit awkwardly with the realities of maritime life, where connectivity is limited, time off watch is precious, and the people worth meeting are often already sailing the same seas or working the same platforms. OffWatch starts from that constraint rather than treating it as an edge case.

Our commitment to privacy

We intend to build OffWatch around data minimisation from the outset: collecting what is genuinely needed to provide the service, being clear about what is collected and why, and avoiding the kind of broad data harvesting that has become common practice elsewhere in the industry. Full detail is set out in our Privacy Policy, which — as a pre-launch document — is still subject to legal review before the app launches publicly.

Genuine relationships, not engagement addiction

Much of the modern social app landscape is optimised to maximise attention: infinite scroll, variable-reward notifications, and metrics built around time-in-app rather than outcomes for the people using it. OffWatch is being designed against that model. Success, for us, looks like people spending less time in the app because they've made a real connection — not more.
